Itinerary

Day one kicks off on Plose, just above Bressanone. You'll take the cable car up, then hike through flower-filled meadows. The trail winds past Telegraph Peak where you can check out the old radar station and get your bearings from the panorama table. Then it's a careful descent down to a lovely rifugio. This alpine hut sits in the sun with views that will make you forget you're tired. Grab lunch, take your time, then loop back through pine forests. Easy pace, big scenery.
Day two's all about the Ölberg Via Ferrata near Vipiteno. After a quick drive and a 15-minute walk, you're clipped in and climbing. This route opened in 2022, so everything's solid and well-marked. The rock's dark, the valley's green, and you'll spend about three hours working your way up with your guide choosing the right path for your level. The payoff? Stunning views over Val di Vizze and then coming down, the thrill of crossing a suspended bridge. This Hiking and Via Ferrata tour is a fantastic way to spend two days in the Dolomites. Hiking and Via Ferrata 2-Day Tour in South Tyrol / Day 1 Hike on the Plose

Your guide meets you in the morning and you'll ride the Plose cable cars up to 2012m / 6601'. From there, it's a beautiful hike along the Dolomites Panorama Path with meadows, wildflowers, and epic mountain views. To the southeast, you’ll spot the dramatic Sass de Putia / Peitlerkofel (2875m / 9432'), the tallest peak in the Odle d’Eores / Aferer Geisler range, as well as the striking Odle di Funes / Vilnösser Geisler peaks. You'll pass a lovely rifugio, the summit of Telegraph Peak at 2486m / 8156', (the highest point on Plose), then make your way down to your destination rifugio at 2,085m / 6841'. The terrace here overlooks the whole valley and it’s a perfect spot for a proper South Tyrolean lunch. Try the Tiroler Marende if you're hungry (you will be!) Return through the pine forests back to the cable car.

    (~4-5 hours hiking 13,5km / 8,4 miles, 577m / 1893' ascent and descent.)

Hiking and Via Ferrata 2-Day Tour in South Tyrol / Day 2 Via Ferrata Ölberg

After breakfast, you'll meet your guide and get fitted with your via ferrata kit. You'll then take a short drive to Prati at the Val di Vizze entrance, then a 15-minute walk to where the climbing starts. The Ölberg route is modern (opened 2022), well-equipped, runs over 500m / 1640', with an elevation gain of 230m / 755', and takes around three hours to complete. You'll climb along the right side of Ölberg, hugging the rock face with different sections to match your ability. Your guide picks the route. At the rest area, fabulous views open over Val di Vizze and the surrounding mountains. Coming down, there's a suspended bridge over a stream (you can bypass it if you'd rather not).

    (~3-4 hour excursion, 500m / 1640' of via ferrata, 230m /755' altitude gain.)

What You Need to Know
Layering for Mountain Weather Summer temperatures can hit 80°F / 25°C in the valleys but drop to 60°F / 15°C on summits during the day and as low as 30°F / 0°C in the evening. Layer up with synthetic fabrics like polypropylene or Capilene®—they wick moisture and dry fast. Wool or wool/synthetic blends work too. Always pack rain gear; mountain weather changes fast.
Footwear Tips Break in new boots or trail running shoes before your trip. Pack blister protection like Band-Aid Blister Block—even old shoes can cause trouble on long days. Trail running shoes are built for off-road terrain with deeper lugs, aggressive tread, and stiffer soles to protect against rocks and roots.
Trekking Poles Recommended for those that need knee support on descents and added stability. Practice with one or two before the trip.
Rifugio Overnights Many rifugios offer drying facilities, so you can wash and dry clothes overnight for a lighter pack the next day. A silk sleeping bag liner is required for shared dormitory rooms.
