Itinerary

Alta Badia is an ideal gateway for newcomers to via ferrata. This easy day trip involves a scenic e-bike ascent through the UNESCO Puez-Odle Natural Park and a beginner's climb on the modern Les Cordes route, a line that follows an ancient farmers' access trail to the high pastures of Gardenaccia.
The day begins in La Villa, where you'll bike up along a wide forest road. For those who prefer to save energy, a chairlift can carry bikes and riders to the upper station, skipping the uphill pedal entirely.
From there, a short approach leads to the start of the climbing route, which was opened in 2019 but is rooted in centuries of alpine tradition. Today, fixed cables and iron steps protect a 280m / 920' ascent that will give you a wonderful introduction to via ferrata, with enough variety to engage first-timers without overwhelming them.
You'll climb to a lovely rifugio, perched high on the edge of the Puez-Odle plateau with views across the Conturines, Lavarella, Tofane, Pelmo, Civetta, and Marmolada. After a well-earned break, you'll return following a pleasant trail back to the chairlift and an easy e-bike descent to the valley.

What You Need to Know

Layering for Mountain Weather
Summer temperatures can hit 80°F / 25°C in the valleys but drop to 60°F / 15°C on summits during the day and as low as 30°F / 0°C in the evening. For every 1,000 feet climbed, the temperature drops by 3.6°F (6.5°C per 1,000 meters). Layer up with synthetic fabrics like polypropylene or wool - they wick moisture, dry fast, and provide effective insulation with a lightweight feel. Mountain weather is unpredictable, and swift temperature drops during sudden storms can be dangerous if unprepared. Always pack rain gear.

Footwear Tips
Break in new boots or shoes before your trip. Pack blister protection like Band-Aid Blister Block - even familiar footwear can cause trouble on long days. Sturdy ankle support is essential for via ferrata approaches and descents.

Cycling Apparel Tips
Wear comfortable cycling clothes suitable for all-day wear, providing protection from cold and possibly wet weather. Use your judgment on quantities based on expected weather and luggage restrictions.

Saddle Time
Being on a bike all day is wonderful, but if you're not used to it, you may get sore! Spend as much time on your bike as you can before the trip, and you'll enjoy it far more.

Trekking Poles
Recommended for those who need knee support on descents and added stability on via ferrata approaches. Practice with one or two before the trip.

Safety and Security
Your guide will carry a comprehensive bicycle repair kit. Repair sprays are not recommended.
