Itinerary

The Astaldi Route is one of the most extraordinarily equipped trails in the Cortina d'Ampezzo area, winding across the dramatic southern slopes of Tofana di Rozes. Rather than climbing straight up, this unique via ferrata traverses a remarkable system of natural ledges and terraces carved into the mountain, offering a completely different perspective on the vertical world of the Dolomites.
What sets this route apart is its extraordinary geology. As you move across the mountain, you cross the colorful Raibl Formation, where layers of red, orange, grey, and yellow rock create vivid contrasts against the pale dolomite limestone above. It's a landscape that feels almost painted, and it exists nowhere else in the region quite like this.
At approximately 2,083m / 6,834', the route is accessible to confident hikers and families. Fixed cables protect the exposed ledge sections, while the traversing nature of the route keeps physical demands moderate. Throughout the journey, spectacular views open across the Ampezzo Valley and the surrounding Tofane peaks, making every step feel like a discovery.
This half-day experience is ideal for those seeking an introduction to via ferrata in a dramatic but manageable setting. Browse the full program below and start planning your Astaldi Route adventure today, or explore our other daily via ferrata activities.

What You Need to Know

Layering for Mountain Weather Summer temperatures can hit 80°F / 25°C in the valleys but drop to 60°F / 15°C on summits during the day and as low as 30°F / 0°C in the evening. Layer up with synthetic fabrics like polypropylene or Capilene®—they wick moisture and dry fast. Wool or wool/synthetic blends work too. Always pack rain gear; mountain weather changes fast.

Footwear Tips Break in new boots or trail running shoes before your trip. Pack blister protection like Band-Aid Blister Block—even old shoes can cause trouble on long days. Trail running shoes are built for off-road terrain with deeper lugs, aggressive tread, and stiffer soles to protect against rocks and roots.

Trekking Poles Recommended for those that need knee support on descents and added stability. Practice with one or two before the trip.
